When to Get Your First Mammogram?

radiologie Montréal

Breast health is an important concern for many women, and mammography plays a central role in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.

Yet, a common question often arises: At what age should you get your first mammogram?

At Léger Radiologie, we believe that information and prevention are your best allies! Our mission is to support you every step of the way, answer your questions, and provide a reassuring and professional environment.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a medical imaging exam that uses low-dose X-rays to obtain detailed images of breast tissue. It is a safe and effective exam, performed with modern equipment that meets the highest standards. Its purpose is to detect abnormalities that are not yet palpable or visible, such as small masses or microcalcifications.

There are two main types of exams:

  • Screening mammogram: This is offered as a preventive measure for women who do not have any symptoms.
  • Diagnostic mammogram: This is prescribed when a patient has signs or symptoms (a lump, discharge, nipple irritation) or when an abnormality is detected during a screening.

In any case, know that the majority of observed abnormalities are benign, which highlights the importance of not worrying unnecessarily and trusting a specialized medical team like the one at Léger Radiologie.

The Importance of Early Detection

Why is there so much emphasis on early detection?

Because a mammogram can detect breast cancers at an initial stage, even before symptoms appear. Detecting cancer early often means less aggressive treatments, increased survival rates, and, most importantly, a better quality of life.

The statistics are clear: thanks to breast cancer screening, the mortality rate related to this disease has decreased in Canada since the 1980s. This shows how valuable this exam is as a tool for protecting women’s health.

Recommended Age for a First Mammogram

In Quebec, the Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Program (PQDCS) outlines the official recommendations.

According to this program, women aged 50 to 74 are invited to have a mammogram every two years. If you are in this age group, you will receive an official invitation letter that serves as a medical prescription. You simply need to bring this letter to your appointment.

However, every situation is unique. Some women with higher risk factors (such as a family history of breast cancer or significant breast density) may need to consider their first mammogram earlier than the recommended age. In this case, it is essential to talk to your doctor, who can guide you toward the most appropriate screening for your profile.

Furthermore, in Quebec, mammograms are covered by the RAMQ, which makes this exam accessible to all women concerned.

Your Role in Screening

Even though a mammogram is an essential tool, it is still important to stay attentive to your body.

If you notice any changes in your breasts (a lump, redness, discharge, unusual pain), it is recommended to consult your healthcare professional promptly, even if your previous screening exams were normal.
