Breast Imaging

A mammogram is an exam that allows physicians to diagnose pathology of the breast. It is a safe examination that emits low doses of radiation to produce high quality images.

Our imaging center meets the highest quality standards and is accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists Mammography Accreditation Program.

Mammogram

Screening

Mammogram screening is offered as an early detection measure for breast cancer in a woman who has no symptoms.

It is the only recognized screening test that reduces the number of deaths from breast cancer.

Are you between 50 and 69 years of age and have received a letter of invitation to undergo an examination as part of the Programme québécois de dépistage du cancer du sein (PQDCS)?

Our clinic is one of the centers designated by the PQDCS to offer breast imaging screening. Your invitation letter serves as a medical prescription. Bring your letter on the day of your exam.

Diagnostic

Mammogram Screening

Diagnostic mammogram is used when a patient has symptoms (breast lump or induration, discharge, nipple irritation) or when an abnormality has been detected following a screening.

It’s important to note that the majority of abnormalities found at screening or diagnostic mammography are benign conditions and are not breast cancer.

Preparation

Do not apply deodorant before the exam.

Contraindication

Pregnancy is a relative contraindication. In this case, the risks and benefits must be weighed against the particular clinical situation.

Please be sure to notify us if you are pregnant.

breast imaging

What to expect

The procedure consists of obtaining front and side images of each breast. To obtain an optimal image of the breast gland and to reduce the radiation dose, it is necessary to apply compression of the breast between two plastic plates which can sometimes be uncomfortable.

The specialized technologist who will perform the examination will take every precaution to enhance your comfort while ensuring the quality of the examination which lasts only a few minutes.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is a complementary examination to mammography and breast imaging and is not a screening test for breast cancer.

Ultrasound is used when there is a palpable mass or when mammography is inconclusive.

Ultrasound can also be used to evaluate certain non-palpable abnormalities detected during a mammogram.

Preparation

None.

Contraindication

None.

What to expect

A transparent, odorless, non-allergenic gel is placed on the breast and the ultrasound probe is moved for image acquisition.

This examination is painless and is performed by a radiologist.

The breast imaging results will be communicated to you and discussed with you on the same day.

Tomosynthesis

(3D Mammogram)

Tomosynthesis, sometimes called a three-dimensional mammogram or 3D mammography, is a breast imaging technique for obtaining images of thin slices of the breast using an adapted mammography machine.

The examination is performed like a standard mammogram, but the X-ray tube is not fixed and moves in an arc during the examination. This allows images of the breast to be acquired from several angles.

After reconstruction by a software, the images obtained allow the analysis in thin sections of the breast.
